 |
visit Beni Hasan and the fascinating tombs of the region’s 11th and 12th dynasty governors, with their unique decorative themes. Continuing south, we travel to Tell el-Amarna, location of the ancient capital city of Akhetaten. Built by the pharaoh Akhenaten in the 18th dynasty, and abandoned soon after his death, this is the only surviving example of a New Kingdom city.
Covering an area of around eight miles, Tell-el-Amarna was the capital built by king Akhenaten of the Eighteenth Dynasty. Due to the unique circumstances of its creation and abandonment, it is the only ancient Egyptian city that retained great details of its internal plan.
A cemetery housing a number of 39 ancient tombs dating back to the Middle Kingdom (c. 2040-1640 BCE). The tombs are famous for the quality of their paintings and their famous wrestling scenes. Only a selection of tombs are accessible to public, those include the tombs of: Amenemhet (Ameni), Khnumhotep II (scenes of caravans of Semitic traders), Baqet III (scenes of wrestling techniques), and Khety.
Located a little over four miles west of Hermopolis Magna. The oldest monument found here is a boundary stela of Akhenaten and Nefertiti. The site is best known for its animal necropolis housing thousands of mummified baboons and Ibis sacred to Thoth. Most of these mummies were destroyed by tomb robbers. The site also features the Tomb of Petosiris, which dates back to the Graeco-Roman era. The outside is decorated in typical Late Period style, whilst the outer court is decorated in a Greek style. There is also the Tomb of Isadora, a young woman who once lived in Hermopolis during the reign of Roman Emperor Antoninus-Pius (AD 138–161). She fell in love with a soldier from Antinopolis (modern Sheikh ‘Ibada), and they wanted to get married. However, her father refused, so the young couple decided to elope. Unfortunately, Isadora drowned while crossing the Nile. Her body was mummified, and her father built an elaborate tomb for her, featuring an elegy inscribed in Greek.
known anciently as “Khemenu”, or the “City of the Ogdoad”, referring to the eight primeval gods who, according to ancient Egyptian Mythology, created the world. Its modern name “El-Ashmunein” derives from the Coptic “Shmun”. The chief deity of the region was the lunar god “Thoth”, identified with “Hermes” by the Greeks. Hence, it became known as “Hermopolis Magna” by the Greeks. Today, the site houses the ruins of the temple of Thoth, temple of Amun, a small open air museum displaying two massive statues of “Thoth” as a baboon. There are also some remains of a Roman Christian Basilica, which was built over the site of an earlier Ptolemaic temple. The structure retains most of its granite columns and it is the only basilica to have survived to this degree of preservation anywhere in Egypt.
