Archaeology is the scientific study of human life by looking at things people have left behind. OUR goal is to help you to find out about the everyday life of Ancient Egyptian People in the past.

The Oases of The Western Desert

explore the fabled oases of the Western Desert, beginning in the romantic city of Alexandria, a bustling metropolis in which the remains of the Great Lighthouse and sister Library can still be seen. We continue, tracing the epoch-making footsteps of Alexander the Great as he made his way to Siwa Oasis, the archaeological remains of which are set within a landscape of indescribable beauty. Traveling through drifting sand dunes and chalk formations, we cross Farafra Oasis, renowned for its “inselbergs,” and visit the new archaeological sites in Bahariya Oasis. Several days are spent in the oases of Kharga and Dakhla, visiting tombs dating to the Old Kingdom as well as others, vividly painted, from the Roman and Early Christian periods. We visit the temples at Deir el-Hagar, Hibis, and Doush, picturesquely erected at the end of the desert caravan route to the Sudan. This visually spectacular tour ends at Thebes, touring Malqata, the harbor and palace of Amenhotep III, and the tomb of Nefertari.

Day 1 to Day 3:

Arrival Cairo Airport, Meet and assist, transfer to your hotel, overnight.spend 3 days to visit most important sights, The Great 3 Pyramids and Sphinx, the Solar Ships , The restored ship, which consisted of 1,224 pieces of wood in 651 major groups which had been partly dismantled and stacked in thirteen successive layers in the pit, measured 142 feet in length, more than sixteen feet in width, with a capacity of about forty tons. The ship was built without any nails; the pieces of wood held together solely by the use of tenon and mortise joint. It was identified as the world's oldest intact ship and has been described as "a masterpiece of woodcraft" that could sail today if put into water. Visit The Step Pyramid Complex of Djoser (also spelled Zozer) was built during the Third Dynasty (ca. 2800 B.C.) Intended to hold his mummified body, Pharaoh Djoser's Step Pyramid at Saqqara began as a traditional, flat-roofed mastaba. But by the end of his 19-year reign, in 2611 B.C., it had risen to six stepped layers and stood 204 feet (62 meters) high. It was the largest building of its time.

Day 4 to day 5 :

spend the next two days in Alexandria, the city founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC. Touring includes Qait Bey Citadel, the site of the Great Lighthouse, lavishly painted tombs dating from about 200 BC, the Ptolemaic necropolis at Shatby, the lovely Hellenistic painted tombs at Mustapha Pasha, the catacombs of Kom el-Shuqafa, Tigranes’s Tomb, Pompey’s Pillar, the Serapeum, and Kom el-Dikka with its wonderful Roman odeon made of fine white marble and large bath complex. We will also visit the newly excavated mosaics on the site of the Great Library of Alexandria and the Graeco-Roman Museum. Renaissance Hotel.

Day 6: MERSA MATROUH:

Driving through the newly reclaimed desert and along the Mediterranean coast, we stop at Abu Menas, a pilgrimage site known for its exceptional basilica, which flourished in the 5th to 7th centuries. Touring continues at Abusir (Taposiris), with its temple dedicated to Osiris and Roman lighthouse, and the war memorials at El-Alamein. Mersa Matrouh Hotel.

Day 7 to day 8: SIWA OASIS:

continue along the route Alexander took, in order to consult the oracle of Zeus-Ammon, from Memphis to Siwa Oasis. We enter a flat, stony expanse of desert and finally see the reddish hills and date-palm groves of Siwa Oasis and the new Safari Siwa Hotel, located on the edge of the village. During our stay we will visit many sites within the oasis as well as the surrounding desert. We will begin our touring at the ancient town of Aghurmi, site of the Temple of the Oracle, the 30th Dynasty temple at Umm Ubayda and the spring known locally as Cleopatra’s Bath. On Friday we will concentrate on sites in eastern and western Siwa, including the painted tombs at Gebel el-Mawta, the Ptolemaic stone-built tomb chapels of Abu Awwafand the last inhabited hatiyat on the eastern side of Siwa, El-Zaytun, constructed around a stone temple. In Hatiyat Khamisaone of the most fertile parts of Siwa, we find a small stone temple and a ridge of over 100 rock-cut tombs. Nearby is the famous Doric-style temple and tomb at Bilad el-Rum. Our last stops of this full day will be at the new Siwa House Ethnographic Museum and the medieval fortress of Shali, the deserted central village of the oasis founded in 1203 AD.

Day 9 to day 10: BAHARIYA OASIS:

reenter the Western Desert, also known as the Libyan Desert, crossing the rough desert track to Bahariya Oasis. Only 225 miles from Cairo, it has been the least touched by the modern world and survives today on its date palms and hot springs. We will visit the newly opened archaeological sites in Bahariya Oasis, including the temple dedicated to Alexander the Great, the 26th Dynasty temple of Ain el-Muftilla, the tomb of the 19th Dynasty Governor Amenhotep, and the 26th Dynasty tombs of the merchants Bannentiu and his father Djed-Amun-lufankhA tour highlight will be the recently discovered “Valley of the Golden Mummies” (pending the required permission). Day 11 to day 12 :

From Bahariya we traverse a rugged landscape until, finally, the famous white chalk “inselbergs” of the Farafra Depression come into view. Skirting vast stretches of drifting dunes that often overrun the road, we continue on to Dakhla Oasis, known for its fruit orchards and traditional village architecture. Mut Hotel. We will spend Tuesday in Dakhla Oasis touring a Roman temple at Deir el-Hagar and the wonderfully painted Roman tombs of Pelusis and Petosiris at el-Mazauwaka, the Old Kingdom necropolis of Qila el-Dabba at Balat, the relief-decorated Roman tomb of Kitnes at Bashendi and, if possible, the new Canadian excavations.

Day 13 to day 15:

continue to the most populated and developed of the oases, Kharga, and the Rowad OasesHotel, with its relaxing garden setting. Touring here includes visits to the Roman Temple of Nadura, the fascinating Bagawat Christian Cemetery, which has mud-brick tombs painted with Biblical scenes, the newly reconstructed Hibis Temple, built by Darius I in honor of Amun and the new Museum of the Oases. In the 1920s, it took a day and a half to reach Doush (ancient Kysis). Our trip will be a bit shorter! Here we will visit a large Roman fortress and the stone temple built during the reigns of Domitian and Trajan and decorated during the reign of Hadrian. We will stop at two Ptolemaic and Roman temples: the fortress-like Qasr el-Ghueita, built of red sandstone, and Qasr el-Zaiyan, a small Roman temple with splendid pylons bearing a Greek inscription commemorating its restoration during the reign of Antoninus. We will also have time to explore the oases on our own.

Day 16 to day 17:

Leaving our wonderful oases behind, we travel through the Western Desert for the last time and reenter the Nile Valley just south of Luxor. We will spend a full afternoon visiting Karnak Temple and a day on the West Bank of the Nile in order to visit a few of the many sites not usually seen, including Malqata, the royal residence of Amenhotep III, and the recently conserved tomb of Nefertari, as well as some of the newly opened tombs in the Valley of the Kings. There will be time for independent visits to the Luxor Museum and to explore the local suq for last-minute shopping. Mercure Hotel.

Day 18 to day 19:

After a morning at leisure we fly to Cairo and transfer to the Meridien Heliopolis Hotel, where we will have our farewell dinner. Monday we depart early on Lufthansa connecting in Frankfurt to our flight to New York.

An Archaeological Study Tour

The Splendors of Ancient Egypt


Popular interest in Ancient Egypt is often limited to pyramids and mummies, but Egypt played a significant part in the development of Western thought and culture. The great temples of Egypt, such as those at Karnak, the striding male figures in the Cairo Museum, and the reliefs and inscriptions on the temples of Esna, Kom Ombo, and Philae had their impact on the civilizations of the ancient Greeks and Romans. By visiting these outstanding archaeological sites with our lecturer, we will gain significant insights into the culture of Ancient Egypt and appreciate its profound influence on the West.
The Splendors of Ancient Egypt tour is exceptional in many ways. There is time in Cairo to explore this fascinating city in depth. A day will be spent in the Delta, visiting the site of Tanis, first excavated by Flinders Petrie in 1884. We will travel into the Faiyum Oasis and to the rarely visited site of Meydum, known for its collapsed pyramid, to the Hawara Pyramid, and to the important Greek and Roman town of Karanis. Five full days will be spent in Luxor, time for a thorough exploration of Thebes on both the West and East Banks, including a visit to the lavishly painted Tomb of Nefertari in the Valley of the Queens, as well as the temples of Hathor at Dendera, decorated in the name of Cleopatra the Great, and of Seti I at Abydos. During a five-day Nile cruise on the deluxe Oberoi “Philae,” one of the most luxurious vessels plying the Nile, we will visit the Temple of Horus at Edfu, the most perfectly preserved ancient Egyptian temple in existence today, as well as the recently moved Kalabsha Temple in Aswan. A visit to the newly opened Nubian Museum in Aswan and a flying visit to Abu Simbel will complete this tour.

 

Day 1 & 2:

CAIRO: arrival Cairo, meet and assist, transfer to the Hotel,

Day 3, 4 & 5:

CAIRO: Touring highlights include Memphis, the first capital of a united Egypt, and Sakkara, the necropolis of Memphis, the Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx and the, visit Solar Boat of Cheops The Pyramid of Meydum, the tomb of Snefru, Hawara Pyramid and “Labyrinth,” the Faiyum Oasis and the important Greek and Roman site of Karanis.

Day 6, 7 & 8:

CAIRO: transfer to visit The Egyptian Museum’s huge collection, drive into the Delta to Tanis, Zoan of the Bible, and to Ismailia on the Suez Canal and spend our last day in Cairo visiting the Coptic Church of Abu Sarga, Ben Ezra Synagogue, the Coptic Museum, the Citadel, famed as the stronghold of Salah al-Din, Rifai Mosque and the Madrasa of Sultan Hasan, a masterpiece of Mamluk architecture.

Day 9, 10 & 11:

LUXOR: fly to Luxor ,meet and assist , transfer to the hotel , Touring includes the magnificent sanctuary of Amun-Re at Karnak, with its maze of monumental gateways, obelisks and pillared halls, the tombs of the Valleys of the Kings and Queens, the newly conserved tomb of Nefertari, the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahri, one of the most spectacular monuments in Egypt, and a day trip north along the Nile to Dendera, visiting the Temple of Hathor and to Abydos, to visit the Temple of Seti I, with its famous List of Kings and some of the most beautifully painted reliefs surviving from Pharaonic times. One evening we return to Karnak for a Sound and Light performance.

Day 12:

CRUISE SHIP/LUXOR: transfer to the Nile Cruise for the next four nights, Touring continues at Medinet Habu, the tombs of the Nobles, of special interest for their artistic and naturalistic murals, and the Temple of Luxor.

Day 13: SAIL/EDFU:

Before sailing to Edfu , transfer to visit Deir el-Medina, a well-preserved town site, the Ramesseum, the Colossi of Memnon and the rarely visited tombs of Kheruef and Ankh-Hor.

Day 14: SAIL/KOM OMBO:

Sail, visit Temple of Edfu, the completely preserved Ptolemaic temple of the falcon god Horus, dedicated to the ram-headed creator god Khnum-Re, sail , visit Kom Ombo, with several hours to enjoy the ever-changing panorama of life along the Nile before arriving at Kom Ombo, spectacularly set overlooking the Nile.

Day 15:

ASWAN: Sail, arrival Aswan, where touring includes the Quarry, where an unfinished obelisk remains embedded in its native stone, the High Dam and the Ptolemaic temple dedicated to Isis, known as Philae.

Day 16 & 17:

ASWAN: disembark ation after breakfast, transfer to the Hotel for two nights. Touring includes the Kalabsha Temple, the Graeco-Roman kiosk of Qertassi, the shrine of Ramesses II and the new Museum of Nubian Civilization. We sail by felucca to Elephantine Island, visiting its excavations and small museum, and fly to Abu Simbel, where the rock-cut temples of Ramesses II and his favorite queen, Nefertari, have been saved from the rising waters of the Nile resulting from the Aswan High Dam. Our stay ends with an afternoon at leisure to explore the fascinating spice bazaar, charter a felucca or relax at the pool.

Day 18 & 19:

CAIRO: Breakfast, transfer to Aswan airport,return flight, Arrival Cairo Airport, meet and assist, transfer to the hotel, relax and free day
